A Community of the Broken

1. For us to be a step in the right direction, we need to understand really what the “church” is. This word means literally “assembly”, in which we can infer that requires a group of people reunited for the Lord. Church is people; Paul talks about in the Bible of the church as a metaphor of a human body: different parts, but all working together for the same goal. We are the head of the body in this mission trip, there are different parts of it, but all of them work together for the same. If people stop thinking about themselves, if WE stop thinking about ourselves and start thinking as a group, as individual parts, all of us will be collaborating for the goal to be accomplished.
2. It’s very important because in the case of this trip becoming a “sanctified tourism”, we would be people that are going to serve rather than servants. Sanctified tourism means that this is a temporary trip; literally it is a short-term mission trip, but not a mission that will not last on our lives or in their lives and this is what sanctified tourism will turn our trip into. We really need to avoid this by our preparation for this trip, knowing all the context of what missions are and most important, feed ourselves with the Bible in which we will find all truth especially in Paul’s life.
3. Other ideas that struck in this article were:
WMF strives to cultivate a mosaic of diverse Christian community--> not only this organization but ALL of us need to have this principle in our lives instead of living by prejudice.
And it is only when women and men work together that we demonstrate the wholeness of Christ’s body-->Galatians 3:28, I didn’t realize that we demonstrate the wholeness of Christ’s body this way, but as I read this verse, it just got clear to me. We as a team of men and women need to work together for this principle to be true in our lives and work. We are committed to show the wholeness of Christ’s body.

Hey Josue! Todd again. If you missed it, I "introduced" myself in a comment on your last post.

You're focused on unity within the ranks of your team! That's great. Jesus talks about unity as being so important, that it should be the sign to others in the world who don't know Him, to convince them that He was sent from God, and that we are loved by God in the same way that Jesus is loved by God.

Wow... what kind of lovingly unified servants would give off that message so clearly? It would be worth it for sure to think about the details of that... what that look like, in your purposes for being in Peru? In the way you spend your days there? In the way you relate to the Peruvians and build relationships?

I'd also encourage you to think a little about how you would be a positive agent for change if certain member(s) of your group DIDN'T display this unity. How would you respond if someone was more frustrated by the lack of conveniences and comfortable life while in Peru? If someone acts judgmental or negative towards some Peruvians because they are different from you all in some way? If someone just seems distracted in some simple way from truly serving the people there?

It's great to see you've read materials from Chris Heuertz, speaking on how Word Made Flesh servants serve around the world. I was privileged to go with WMF to Calcutta, India in 2005 for 4 months to serve primarily in Mother Theresa's homes for children, and to help out with the relief effort in Sri Lanka after the killer Tsunami. WMF really challeges their people to move beyond the structures that keep life comfortable and keep us away from really meeting people who are poor and without privileges right where they are at, treating them with dignity and honor as God's creations, made in His image.

If you ever want to respond to one of my comments or anything, feel free to write me at ohbrothertodd@hotmail.com. Hope the preparations continue to go well. I'll talk to you again soon.
